Hi All :)

My sister has a jack russell which they rescued, and they very much believe him to be a Parsons Jack Russell, from his markings, coat & build. Unfortuantely they have not been able to get hold of papers from him.

They have contacted the kennel club who has given them a site address for Parsons, but they are wondering if in anyway they can find out for sure if he is a Pedigree Parsons without his papers?

We would love any input from any one who can help!

Ta!

As far as I am aware, the only way you can get hold of his pedigree is by knowing the name of the breeder, I cant think of any other way. And even if he is a pedigree, he may not have been registered, and papers can mean two things, a pedigree and/or registration with the KC.

I dont think 'papers' are worth the paper they are written on, as breeders can, and do, register litters with incorrect parents. So if you knew the breeder and asked for a pedigree, she could put the pedigrees of any of her male and female JRT's together as the parents and you would be none the wiser, unless you wanted blood tests I suppose. Puppy farmers are the worst offenders, as they will keep using one brood bitch over and over again, but register the litters under different parentage.

I dont know if I have explained that well enough, Lankeela will probably put you right if you dont understand me.
If you get in touch with the breed club/breed rescue sometimes they know by the look of the dog who bred it.

Some kennels (especially in rarer breeds) breed a certain 'type/line' of dog that is easily recognised by others in the breed. I know in my breed knowledgeable people can usually tell you who bred what dog just by looking at a photo.

The only other way would be if the dog had a tattoo or a microchip.

Hi Jules & Kita,
Thanks for your replies.

When I say he was rescued, he came from some one they knew but are not on talking terms and there for can not get the papers, not he was from a rescue centre.

I will pass on what you have said to them,

Thanks again!
ok right, so is this person that they knew the breeder? if so, and the know the kennel name, and the puppies were registered with the kennel club they would be able to get the pedgiree.

No, it wasnt the breeder, and as far as I know, I think they did ask when they got him, but they wouldnt tell them anything really about him.
I know what Kita is saying that people do recognise a line/type of dog, but no one will be sure and put their name to it, so I dont think you stand much chance of getting any pedigree or registration documents, sorry couldnt tell you anything more positive.
If they know the name of the people they got him from, provided the dog was registered with the KC and the owners transferred the registration to their own name from the breeders, the details of the transfer will be in the Kennel Club Breed Records Supplement. Also it might be possible to trace the litter the dog came from if they know how old he is, and which area he is in, as there are not that many Parsons bred.

If they contact the secretary of one of the breed clubs, she will be able to tell them of either a breeder in their area who would be willing to look at the dog and give an opinion, or the date/place of a club show or get together where they could attend and meet people in the breed who would be willing to help.
