thanks Ratter give it a go
I have been informed by a work colleague-who is very keen on fishing-that it would depend on the circumstances/area/whats being fished for etc. The suggestion is for you to contact a carp specialist who would provide you with more information. Hope that helps (It's all another language to me! :O) )
I always went for about an inch long although i always tied lots of hook length rigs all at different lengths with different length hairs...an inch was the most used though.

thanks hammerman think l will do the same l am losing a lot of fish not getting hooked.Read web sites and they vary lhave always had a gap of 5mm but some experts have said upto 1to3ins
It could depend on what rig you're using too....i always favoured a semi fixed bolt rig with a short (6") hooklength with your favoured braid or a stiff link. 2.5 oz lead, size 6 or 8 hook, knotless knot giving the hait going up to a swivel that is tied on with a 4 turn grinner knot. The swivel sits nicely inside the inline lead.

Do you use back leads...might be worth it ?...are you tightening right up so the fish hooks itself the moment it feels the hook etc
