Garlic in their food helps keep fleas away, although if they are infested you need something to get rid of them in the first place. Ticks are a different matter, they need to be Frontlined unless you actually take them off one at a time with a tick remover, but this can leave legs in which can set up infections if you don't get them all out.

A good dosing with Frontline Spray at the beginning of the flea season and a couple of times more during the summer is usually enough. Having several dogs, I do mine all together, but don't perhaps use as much as they say, giving each dog a quick going over and as they mix with each other any fleas are soon caught if they jump off onto another dog. If your animals are going where there are lots of ticks, then regular spraying is necessary.
As a pest controller, I can promise you that the only effective treatment is Frontline for your pets, and a professional pest control company for your home, if required. Don't go wasting your money on cheaper treatments, they just don't work!!

Try odour less garlic tablets and Brewers yeast
Try flea/tick collars, but to remove ticks there are several simple solutions, either pour strong alcohol on the tick and it will drop off, coating it in vaseline also makes it fall out, or burning it (carefully!). Just watch the legs aren't left inside.
Discussing about the home remedy, initially one should know about animal surrounding whether they are in their comfort zone or not. Being a pet owner, one must properly check their living area and remove the harmful things. Regular bath, powders, shampoos, chemical free sprays etc. are few natural things that you can apply for avoiding such infections. However, if still problem exist, you can use a topical solution i.e. Frontline Plus https://www.petcarerx.com/frontline-plus-for-dogs/10884 and get fast result. This treatment is considered best for controlling for flea and ticks without any harmful impacts. But don’t forget to seek advice of vet, before using any treatment.
