Why is it that at this time of year there seem to be more large spiders webs about. When I go out in the garden during the morning I always seem to walk into them.

Hi pudcat, I think you'll find, due to the weather, there are a lot more spiders about than usual.
I've been told that the large spiders we see at this time of year are mature spiders looking for a mate. Then once they've done the wild thing and laid their eggs, they die (old age). Then the newbies hatch in the spring and begin the cycle again.

Aparently this year has been particularly good for spiders due to the weather - lots of flies etc
spiders webs catch a lot more moister later into the year and are a lot more apparent, dont let em fool you Pudcat.
Hi, try sending a small child out infront of you....lol Works for me!

The autumn is the prime time of the season for garden spiders, I find the morning fog or dew helps me to see where the webs are, I dont like them going across my face but I can live with that because I think they look beautiful!
They are getting fattened up on the current glut of craneflies

Thank you all for your replies and advice,
I rather liked Lisa's idea of sending a small child out first to walk into the webs but unfortunately I don't have any chidren to do that, perhaps I might borrow a couple.
