According to the Cambridge Encylopedia, there are 16 species of macaws.
(... but there are a number of severely endangered species, notably the Indigo (Lear's) Macaw and Hyacinth Macaw. Let's hope thsat number doesn't decrease).
Other sources list 19 different types, each with it's own specific latin name. Their common names are :- Blue & Gold, Blue Headed, Blue Throated, Buffons, Chestnut Fronted (also called Severe), Cuban, Glaucous, Greenwing, Hahn's, Hyancinth, Illegars, Lears, Military, Noble, Red Bellied, Red Fronted, Scarlet, Spix's, and Yellow Collared. This list does not include hybrids which will only have been bred in captivity, because Macaws don't hybridise in the wild.
Agh! Not "Greenwing macaws"!

It is difficult to say exactly how many different macaws there are. For instance, the Red-shouldered macaw Ara nobilis is a seperate species in the Ara genus. It does however have two sub-species; A.n.cumanensis and A.n.longipennis, which are slightly different from each other.
If you want to count them as different 'types', there could be as many as 45.
