Insects have rows of small openings along their sides (spiracles). These link to a series of branched tubes called trachea. Oxygen and carbon dioxide can exchange by diffusion. The oxygen dissolves in the body fluids or diffuses directly to the muscles. Muscular contractions of the abdomen or contractions of the flight muscles can assist in pumping gasses through the system.
