My dog used to escape from the house or garden and go on adventure days. When he wanted to come home he would sit on a patch of ground at the end of the road and bark until we went to get him. He had a big, deep scary bark and we knew it was him.

Cats all sound different and have their own vocabulary. Not sure if I would be sure over the phone though.
