Metal dog bowls swiftly gather green slime (or whatever it really is) where the water is, when left outside. Is there a type of dog bowl to which this doesn’t happen?

Plastic bowls take longer to grow slime.
Best bet is to not be lazy and try to clean your beloved pooch's water bowl occasionally.
You get the nice silvery ones that are on the pavements outside pet shops for people to trip over .
Despite having plenty of clean fresh water indoors, my dog prefers to drink out of the birdbath in the garden, which doesn't seem to do her any harm.
Our cats prefer any source of water to their bowl but I wash it when I refill it, every other day
The greyhound I had for several months last year drank out of the toilet. They supposedly do that because the water is colder/fresher.
I think Cleo the cat did the same, though there is always fresh downstairs.
I have read that the best water to give pets is the water left in the kettle after it has been boiled once, because the chemicals used to disinfect the water have been evaporated into a gas.
I often use kettle water...and for house plants also, as some are sensitive to chemicals.
Fresh clean water always available. Oh look a puddle . He loves puddle water ?
My farm cats had access to a water bowl but they never used it. They drink out of the horse's trough or the pond. I think Tommy thinks if he laps hard enough he may get a gold fish, but hope springs eternal as they say.
Ive seen my horses drinking from puddles of water in the field and they have access to automatic water troughs with constant fresh water. I think animals sense the chemicals in tap water far more than we can.
^boiling tap water will dispel any dissolved gases (oxygen and chlorine or ozone, either of which may be used in treatment). Anything else present will be left either still dissolved or as a deposit (like hardness minerals).
Whether water goes green in sunlight depends on the source of the water originally and not the material of the bowl.
Khandro had a laugh at your post. Son's dog always drinks out of my bird bath when she visits. Put a bowl of water for her but she ignores it. Funnily enough, the birds then have a wee drink or bath in it once she has gone home.
