Photo taken in Scotland quite recently. Long white grub, reddish brown front (face). several sets of legs at the front (maybe the back too).

Looks like some kind of caterpillar.

Very good photo ! but i cant get a good idea of the size


I would say its a beetle lavea of some sort

It is a great photo Fern which made the identification a whole lot easier. The mystery grub is the caterpillar of the Ghost Swift Moth. see here.


As you can see the moth is a stunner but the caterpillar is a nasty little beast. It's up to 40mm in length, spends the winter underground where it does considerable damage to crops, feeding on the roots of young trees and burrowing into bulbs and rhizomes.

Fern and Cetti - thank you for that. I loved the pictures. The moth is an absolutely beautiful creature. Isn't nature wonderful and amazing!!
I should have added that the picture is the female moth. Her husband is pure white, hence the name Ghost Moth - and yes felinechums, I couldn't agree more!
