Where i work there have always been bats in the cellar. These are protected and a few times a year an linspector comes out to check that they are happy n healthy etc.

Well over the past few weeks they've decreased until this morning going down to check (there just because we wondered why we saw so few!) they have all but disappeared!. From hundreds to no more than a dozen.

Any idea as to why? Very worrying as they are protected and there's a hefty fine if we've inadvertently disturbed them.

Probably gone to the belfry?
Question Author
No belfry here and also we used to see them all the time at dusk and now nothing! OR very few!
Are they seasonal?
Question Author
No, they've been there for years. Winter they hibernate and are more active in spring / summer but always return to roost in the day.

We did need to go down to the cellar with a torch a few weeks back (investigate a maintenance issue) so i hope that hasn't made them disappear. Quite worried tbh as we have to let the bat society people know!
Is it worth contacting the inspectors and expressing your concern?
They might be able to advise, and realise you are not the cause of their departure.
Question Author
yes i will contact them. Just wanting to know in advance if it was our fault to prepare lol
