I'm concerned about the nail on my right hand index finger. The white half moon area (lunula?) at the base of the nail disappeared virtually overnight leaving a hole and a wet area underneath. It looked like it had gone and been replaced with a tiny drop of water. This dried within hours but now the nail looks like it is being eaten away upwards from the area. The nail itself is still attached and is not loose, at least for now.
I've looked online and found a condition called on oncholysis but the photographs online don't resemble what I've got. It hurts very slightly when I use the finger for typing etc but it's not really painful.
I would be grateful for any suggestions about what this could be.
Thank you.

Is it red and painful?........if so it is called a paronychia which tends to be bacterial.
If it is not swollen and red it is probably a fungal infection.
Either way, it is no big deal and should settle without medical consultation or treatment.

Thank you Sqad. It's not painful and neither is it red.

It just looks alarming because it looks as if something is eating away at the nail from the base towards the fingertip.

Do you think that the nail will regrow normally some time in the future if the damaged nail comes away? Would some antifungal cream help?

Thanks Sqad

i had paronychia and it did grow back normally - but it took blooming ages
Yes, try the antifungal cream, but I agree with the post of bednobs above.
