Both. When I found myself with no dog or cat a few months ago, I immediately thought I must get another dog. But I soon realised I was yearning for a cat...or 2. So that's what I've got now. Not sure I'll ever have another dog. I find myself feeling unsure around them now.
How well did the cats settle, Pasta?

I think the nervous one was Tubby. Did he accept the newbie and make friends?
Pasta, I lost confidence, with a bad experience as well, but I'm glad I was persuaded to carry on.
In my personal opinion, dogs... but I love both and have both. I think it depends on your lifestyle and what you are looking for.
Hi Hopkirk. Tubby/Toby is still hiding...though he ventured out from under the sofa the other night...wandered to the kitchen, then down the hall to the stairs. Looked up, then towards me. Wandered back down the hall and tucked himself under a chest of drawers. A few hours later I heard him snoring under the sofa. He also plays under the sofa...
I do wonder what has made him such a fearful boy...well, humans obviously. I'm gradually making his hiding space a bit smaller, and I'll be getting him a cat cave to hide out in the open. It's very tiny steps.
Sorry if I've taken over zxylaphone.
Tbh, I find cats more of a "tie", they bond with a place more than a person. So, when we go away, we can take the dogs. But have to find someone to come to the house for the cats.
I love big dogs. An there's nothing better than giving a 7 stone dog a big, fat cuddle. Our next dog (not for another 8-9 years, hopefully), will be smaller as we'll be too old for another biggun.
A cat will neither deter nor protect you from a burglar
After a failed rescue, I struggled with Rodney. It took just over a year for me to be completely comfortable around him. He can be a funny sod, probably due to his previous life, but we know his mannerisms and ways now, that makes reading him a lot easier.
'A cat will neither deter nor protect you from a burglar'

That's probably the main reason that I'd go for a dog over a cat
If...and it's big IF...I regained my confidence and the right small dog came along...I might reconsider.
But, I'm happy at the moment with my 2 furry heartbeats. At least one of them guards the bed...!
Thanks Pasta.

Keep us updated on Tubby. I hope he fully relaxes in his new home before too long
I'm glad they are doing well, pasta :-). I just wouldn't want you to be put off, for something that was never your fault.

I am a dog lover so I'll go for dogs. I like cats in general but I don't prefer them to be a pet because they scare me sometimes.
