Some Ploughman !

A recent e-mail dropped into my in basket from one of the ready meal distributing companies (I will spare their blushes by keeping them anonymous) which listed "new meals for the winter", one of which was a Ploughman's Lunch. A nice simple olde worlde meal you might think. But just wait until you see the ingredients :-

I don't know what is more incredulous - you not realising the ingredients in a pickle will be more than veg sugar and vinegar, or the fact you've taken the time to type all this out.

It's from Wiltshire Farm Foods. If they had described it as traditionally made or something similar, I could see your point but they hadn't.

well I wouldn't consider that a ploughmans, but for a ready meal version of such it's not too bad - pork pie, roll, pickle and cheese. I would prefer some salad with mine, and pickled onions but I guess you can't easily do that with a ready meal

I also didn't realise it was a frozen ready meal - deffo no salad or pickled onions then :(

ps ploughmans should never contain apple, unless you are having the apple for afters IMO

I thought bread, cheese, pickle and an apple was a traditional ploughman's lunch. Pork Pie would go off in the heat.

I've had a ploughmans sandwich with pickle, cheddar and lettuce, but never a lunch. Didn't realise pork was involved.

Is it a dish you can add anything cold to? Regional variations?

I think there must be regional differences. A ploughman's up here always has cheese ,apple, pickle, and bread. Sometimes pork pie or a slice of ham depending on the pub.
