Walking my dogs in the fields around here, I noticed that the sweetcorn.was harvested over the week just leaving stalks about 1 foot high. What are the whole plants used for , animal feed or sweetcorn for human beings ? Is a combine harvester used to harvest the 6 foot tall plants ?

Thanks for those 2 answers, I'd still like to know if the whole plant gets used and how on earth does a combine get all the 6 foot plus plants up. Do they have to use a chipper first ?
the stalks could be a potential valuable source for making ethanol for adding to petrol and, as such, this is quite an interesting near CO2 neutral source.
sorry ignore that ...Wrong Crop !!

Thanks everyone, really interesting information>
Same type of corn (I think, from description) used to be drown around us in France - it was used for oil. A special harvester with huge-diameter wheels is used to harvest (a neighbour nearly lost his arm in one!).
Ta :-)
There has been a lot grown round me this year and I was told it was just used for oil production.
