This is not just here in the UK it is worldwide , when it's winter here it's summer on the other side of the world. So somewhere always has new fresh leaves growing. The atmosphere circulates around the entire world so somewhere always has new fresh foliage to absorb CO2.

Any other plants around which stay green eg, coniferous trees, grass, holly etc.

Although the leaves on deciduous fall in the autumn, a gaseous exchange is still possible to some extent through small glands (lenticels) on the twigs and branches.
Anything else that grows Balloney......the Amazon jungle is there and does its job, 12 months of the year.
Just to add a little more info - Apparently 70 percent of the earths oxygen is produced by plankton in the ocean!
yeah I had read that plankton did the main job

which leads us to conclude that the chief or even minor effect of deciduous tree is to clearl CO2 from the local environment
but they are there to do something else
( provide energy for tree growth )
My grandfather, who unfortunately died just a few weeks before I was born in 1953, used to have a saying that Mum passed down to me ::::::: In the Summer all you see are leaves, but in the Winter you can see the tree again !
I'm struggling with the maths on that one Mikey.
Apologies, I've now read it as you wrote it. :-)
Donald Trump!
I think that what he meant is that trees are such magnificent things, that some times we don't see the tree itself, but only its canopy of leaves.

I don't wish this to sound any deeper than it is but in our family, its still recorded that he said it.
It isn’t autum at the same time all over the planet.
I can't see the wood for the leaves.
Zacs - No. It's spring in the southern hemisphere when it's autumn here.
No Zacs, that's why they have Christmas on the beach in the former penal colonies. :-)
No Mikey. It means that when things are easy and going well the leaves are there for show. But when the going gets hard and cruel the thing that provides the bonanza is there for all to see. Much more profound than you realise.
