Could be an injured or sick bird, you don't usually get that close to a gannet.

I looked them up and they don't seem to be round here normally which is why I wondered what sort of bird it was .

It's not April 1st is it yet. No not quite it's definitely a gannet maybe it got blown off course from somewhere. It does look rather fluffed up. Gannets usually look sleek.

We got one in Sheffield last year, it was stuck under some undergrowth in a river. The bird was rescued & was taken to Bempton.

There is one more picture but I don't like to put it up as there are a couple of young girls sitting on the sand quite near to it . From the close proximity of them to the bird I would have to say that it is probably injured :(

Yes definitely a gannet but not in its usual habitat, which would usually be a more remote rock outcrop.
My guess is its probably was blown off course or somehow lost its way.
