Planting out some bedding plants today and in one old plant pot came across an ugly looking thing! It was about an inch long, quite plump and had two tiny black eyes and a short black spike at the other end. It was a sort of coppery brown colour. I looked up leather jacket on google, but I couldn't see any like the one I saw.

ha ha BOO. A leather jacket is the grub of the crane fly, which was my first thought. Agree, it is a cool name for something so horrid !!!

Hi tony - that's a beetle and it's devils coach horse (had one of them in my yard once and it scared the beejesus out of me !) This is a sort of grub thing that I saw today.

Ah righto then chaptazbru, my mom used to call those things Devils Coachman and I have just carried on the tradition. well I now know that it's wrong.

Mind you, I suppose it could have been a beetle larvae. I accidentally touched it and it was all soft and squidgy - arghhhhh !!!
