Found a newt, can I keep it?

I found a newt today while playing golf and took it home to show my son. Now he is asking if we can keep it and look after it. Is this possible our should I release it back?

Seriously? All newts are protected and you may not take them from the wild. Put it back.

the great crested newt is definately a protected species and getting very rare. if i were you i'd put it back where i found it.. they are lovely little animals but dont last long in captivity if not very well cared for..

Please release it. I don't imagine you have a cycled tank with a filter to keep it in [apologies if you do], if not it will soon be dead.
As has been mentioned many newts are protected species and there is a reason for this.

yes of course you should put it back - you should never have taken it in the first place. It's protected by law - please take it back today, it'll die if you don't put it back.

Like all wild animals, they don't make good pets - if you have a garden pond (or neighbours do), then why not release it in your garden?
