In our garden pond we have just come across one of the larger goldfish which appears to be diseased, in that the tips of its scales are black. The fish also appears to be frequently hugging the sides of the pond.

We have been unable to identify the problem when checking some of our garden books.

Can anyone tell me what this problem might be and if it is likely to be contagious to the other fish in there.

I've only just seen your question and perhaps by now you have gone to an acqua. 'shop' and they have advised a modern product.  I remember from childhood that my mum, who kept goldfish in garden pond, experienced a similar thing.  It was contagious - some sort of fungal thing - black spot, was it?  Much playing about with crystals of potassium permanganate followed, isolating of fish whilst the pond was disinfected with the solution.  I expect there are modern products which would do the job without all that work, but you might have to get the fish out, and certainly isolate the sick one.  I hope you already have it iunder control. Good luck!
