I am due to pick up a Jack Russell puppy in two weeks time. I have been reading books on the breed and training. Many advocate the use of a cage for training/living purposes. Having grown up with dogs, I can never remember my father using a cage. Any views on this subject would be appreciated.

We never used a cage for our dogs when growing up but i do for my dogs now. I think it is a great way to house train as the puppy will not soil his own bed. Its not cruel as some people say, but its not a place to leave your dog all the time! A couple of hours at the most during the day if need be. I have found that my dogs love the cage as they think of it as a den and when i have it out for new puppies, my older dogs will often sneak in for a little sleep!

Thanks Snappy. Very much appreciate your reply. Can you suggest a suitable size for a JRT.

I'd get as big a cage as you can afford. I think they are best used when say you have visitors, or you're eating, or you need to do something that would be dangerous for the dog to go leaping about. Never as a punishment though.

Thanks for all your answers. I have just received a cage from gwdavies28(ebay). Good solid cage, excellent delivery. I hope you have as much fun training your pups as I do. I am in the process of making my garden as puppy proof as possible, what a job!
