We have a small mixed woodland above the sea cliffs and tree sparrows have recently moved in. Previously it was the regular haunt of goldfinch and similar but have not seen tree sparrow in 30+ years There are 2 well established groups of them in the locality. From personal observation, has anyone noticed an increase in tree sparrows?

Where we live on Merseyside there are very few tree sparrows around. Going back twenty years or so, it seemed to be half and half but now they are virtually all house sparrows. However, we were in the New Forest where we go on a yearly basis a couple of weeks ago and I saw an enormous amount of tree sparrows as opposed to the chaffinch we normally see there
The abundance of Hedge/Tree Sparrows will vary from region to region throughout the country, plenty of them here in N.Wales
Agree with Kustard, here in Hants we have lots of tree sparrows, but the chaffinch have realy declined. I have had a couple on the bird feeders over the last couple of weeks, where as I used to get loads here. I miss the Chaffinch, hence the name!
Chaffinch, I really must come back to tell you that we have a caravan in the Lake District and the number of chaffinches there in my garden are unbelievable (no tree sparrows though) so to keep your Avitar you will have to relocate!!!

Chaffinch seems to have taken a knockback in our woods yet the goldfinch are doing well. Envy your caravan in the Lakes Kustard. We were in the C.C. and spent a lot of time on a certificated location above Grange over Sands and had good birdwatching.
Now you come to mention it I haven't seen a chaffinch in our garden for a while but I did see some Tree Sparrows in the garden of a pub on the South Downs not far from here. Oh and Chaffinch - love the new avatar.
Seadog, If you are still about, that is quite a coincidence. If you stand on the front at Grange and look directly across the Kent. our site is there in the trees just behind the little pebbled beach (White Creek).

Gotcha Kustard. Grand spot you have!
Kustard, If I just visit the lakes, can I keep my Avatar, I promise to wave to you!
Course you can wave, Chaffinch AND keep your Avitar but don't fly it over me if it's just had its dinner!!! A seagull got me right on my head once in Ulverston when I had just had my hair done and was going to meet a friend for lunch!!!
lol Kustard, that's just the sort of thing that happens to me! My Mum used to say it was lucky if a bird pooped on you.......................wheres the luck in that??
The luck is that it missed someone else!!!
