Cat Fleas

I have two cats and a flea problem. My long haired cat has practically licked himself bald because of it. I have been to the vet, treated them both with Frontline and sprayed the house with RIP Fleas but two weeks later they don't seem much better. Any ideas?

I don`t have any ideas regarding getting rid of the fleas unfortunately. My mum said tonight that her cat is scratching a lot at the moment. The weather is quite mild so that might contribute to it. However, it`s interesting what you said about the cat licking herself bald. My mum`s cat did that a few years ago and the vet said that she has a flea allergy. I think he gave her a jab if I remember (could have been anti-histamine) which helped and the fur grew back.

It sounds like your long haired cat has an allergy to the fleas as this behaviour is quite common in animals that react to the bites. The only way you can prevent the problem getting worse is to get in a professional to treat the property with a residual insecticide. This will interfere with the fleas’ natural life cycle and keep you covered for months. Fleas will be maturing on a regular basis and emerging from pupae as biting adults. Eventually the front line will gain control but this can take some time to show results. You also need to check the following.

1. Cat flaps – are other untreated cats or animals accessing the property through faulty or non security enabled cat flaps?
2. Hygiene – is your property clean and in a good state of hygiene? Flea larvae love unclean or forgotten corners where they can develop undisturbed.
3. Other animals – do you or your family have other pets that they bring to the property?
4. Outdoors – do you have a corner of the garden that is frequented by a wild animal like a badger or fox? They leave fleas behind and these can re-infest animals.
5. You – do you work with or come into contact with other animals that may carry fleas?

The best way to tackle fleas is to bring in a pro. Very often amateur chemicals do not do the job for reasons that include improper application, and low levels of active ingredient. As a pest controller of 13 years running my own company, I disagree with some of your advice and think it is nonsense and inaccurate!!!

If your are having trouble getting the Frontline to work, you may have to resort to Program (injection) It lasts 6 months and is about £20
As for the house, I was told the spray only kill fleas and larvae in direct contact, not eggs. The residue will remain effective for about a month, and you need to vaccumm every other day as the vibration prompts the eggs to hatch, then the larvae will die. I found it did take about 2-3 weeks of scrupulous laundry and vaccing especially corners and sofa cushions etc then they wer all gone.

Thanks for that - I have actually had the Program injection for the long-haired cat and am spraying the house and hoovering like mad! I think these must be super-fleas!!
