I have just got a lovely new pup (black lab) and unfortunately I cannot use my garden so I'm using training pads indoors for the time being.

He keeps having "accidents" so I need to know what is the best kind of disinfectant I could use to clean & deter him away from the rest of my floor insuring he uses the mats.
TIA
Jane

Pine or lemon scented but NOT bleach as that burns paws. Put down newspaper to soak up.

Thanks terambulan. I have tried the lemon and it made no difference. I'll give the pine a go. Its ok, I knew not to use bleach or anything with bleach in it.

What about dettol disinfectant?
The best thing to use is biological washing powder. It cleans all trace of any accident. Disinfectant can mimic the smell of urine (amonia) and can actually encourage accidents.

How are you going to house train him if you can't use your garden?
Just watched Kim and Aggie *How clean is your house* and they say the best thing for pet poo / wee is white vinegar it gets rid of all traces of smell after the patch has been cleaned also the dog / pup doesnt use that bit again

Thanks Banali. I'll try the bio washing powder. Its what the author Gwen Baily recommends.
I can't use the back door to my garden after our house got broken into. We get out to the garden through the garage but it's a long way round and pup can't jump over the steps yet...bless him.

Thankyou Therema. Putting white vinegar on the shopping list. I'm currently using brown vinegar with water and no it's not helping much. My house is smelling a little like a chip shop....lol.
Bicarbonate of soda will neutralize any bad odours as well, sprinkle it over the carpet, leave it for a bit then hoover it up.
I use a carpet and hard surface detergent called Zybax (google for website) It is a good cleaner, digests organic residue to stop and prevent smells (deasls with old smells and stains too) and is completely safe around animals and people...you can use it in carpet and hard surface floor cleaners too.

Thanks Pipsy3. I've heard of the ole bicarb but fortunately I haven't carpets down stairs though I could sprinkle some in the bucket of diluted disinfectant I use atm.

I like the sound of Zybax woofgang. I've been looking on the internet about disinfectant around pets but never came across that one, so will be googling again. Thankyou.

The good thing is when we carry him around to the garden he does his number two's there. We haven't had a number two accident for two days. It's just those number one's. He doesn't use the mats properly and there's so many.....lol.

Can't wait to get my door fixed so we can train him properly..
