We have a 25 litre hexagonal fishtank housing 2 goldfish and we need a filter for the tank. Trouble is I have no idea what filter to get. Any advice would be fab :-)

Thanks!

Lise,
I used to have a small business setting up and maintaining aquaria. For ease of maintenance I would suggest a canister filter, the largest that you can afford. The reasons are :-
1) The larger the filter the higher the rate of flow through it and therefor the more detritus you remove from the water. You must remember now and again to stir up and "hoover" the gravel using a small vacuum filter operated by your air pump.
2) the larger your filter, the greater the interval between cleaning.

Alternatively, you could instal an under-gravel filter, but in an established tank this is quite a messy and time consuming job.
I hope that this may help.
A small internal filter such as a fluval 1 should be fine for a small tank

Something like this would be fine

Personally, I dislike tanks with filters that are too powerful for a small tank. They make the fish swim continually against the waterflow so they can't get proper rest at night.
Are you sure you have the size right???? 25 ltrs is smaller than I keep a single Siamese Fighting fish in and is too small and IMO cruel for 2 gold fish. A gold fish can grow up to 18 inches in length and should be kept in ponds.
Please...if you know someone with a pond donate these fish to them then buy your self a small heater, a small filter and a Siamese Fighting fish....much prettier to look at too.

The shop we purchased the tank from said it was fine for our teeny goldfish and believe me, if they get too big, they will be moved to a pond. I despise large fish in small tanks or overcrowding, so please don't lecture me :-)

Thanks to everyone else for your constructive answers though!
I'm not lecturing anyone...just stating the facts.

A 'fish shop' will tell you anything you want to hear for the most part....they need to stay in business. You may want to look up stunted growth caused by fish being kept in tanks that are too small too. Personally I'm on the fence with that one but wouldn't want to risk it anyway. :0)

I'd go up a notch on filtration probably the one plus or even the fluval 2 and I'd ditch the goldfish and have a few little tropical ones a little swarm of neon tetras would look pretty or even decorative guppies although they are sex mad and breed faster than rabbits if they like the conditions
Hi Lise, I think according to your you must have use a small filter like small canister filter. Because this type of filter is perfect according to your tank size & also comfortable for goldfish. Media URL: http://www.marinedepot.com/marinedepot-aquamaxx-giveaway-ap.html
