Can anybody tell me roughly how much it would cost to place a small ad on a reasonably large website, possibly a link and a few words telling customers what we are about. hopefully a permenant ad

Google Adwords may be the way to do it (thats what you on the right hand side here) or put a link to your website on here!!!
