Vauxhaul Corsa Problems

My grandson has a vauxhall corsa 1998 1.4 and his speedo cable has stopped working.
He took it into the garage who cannot find the problem, he checked the gearbox, the little box on top of the gearbox, the dashboard came off and they are all ok.
Has anyone any ideas what could be wrong and how to repair?

Check the end of the inner cable that goes into the gearbox, the end should be square, he will soon see if it's snapped.

amazed a garage couldnt diagnose such a simple problem on what is relatively quite a basic vehicle.
