I know that I have brought this matter up before, but for some strange reason it was put up to be voted upon, and of course being suggested by myself it was defeated by the anti-AOG brigade.

But this time I am asking the Editor if she would consider making it possible for one to press on a selected 'LATEST POSTS' and then to be sent to that particular latest post and not to the beginning of the thread, which in
some cases can be as many as a hundred or more posts from the latest one?

Yes I know one can go on further and press on the 'LAST' button, but why the need when one can go directly to the latest post at the touch of one button?

I prefer to be sent to the beginning of a thread especially if I haven't visited it for a while. It reminds me of what the thread is all about and what others have said. It's no problem to click 'last' if that's where I want to be.
Sometimes, especially in a lengthy thread, the most recent posts bear little resemblance to the original OP!

Fair points made by AOG and Naomi.
Hi AOG,
I completely understand why you'd prefer it this way, but I also agree with Naomi. It was put to a vote to see if there was an overwhelming amount of people who would prefer it the other way, and as there wasn't, we decided to leave it as it is. If we change it we'll likely have half the members saying they preferred how it was before.
Add a field on profile lastPost, check it and read in accordingly or set the sort accordingly.

Everyone happy and sorted. So to speak :-)
Is it really much effort to have to make that one additional step? What percentage of threads go into the hundreds of posts?

If nothing else, it gives a chance to view the way the thread is developing and reduces the repetition of previous ans
wers.
I posted the following (edited a bit here) on the poll thread -

I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to add a line to each Latest Post, something like - https://tinyurl.com/ydbyale5

...each word ("First" & "Last") being "clickable".
if there's a thread i'm particularly interested in i just leave it open and press f5 when somebody near appears in latest posts
new not near ... i'm sure i typed new

Yes but it does not say 'The 'Beginning of the Thread', it says 'Latest Posts'

When one has been following a particular post with interest, one knows what has gone before, therefore since it says 'Latest Posts' one expects to read the latest post, and not the beginning of a thread.
'Latest' in this context means current activity.

A choice seems a good idea Maj.
I agree with aog. For that reason if I see another post has been added to a thread that I don't want to plough through, I look for the original thread in
The list of posts for each category and click on the red name & time.
Much easier as it takes you to that last post.
If one hasn't been following a thread, one isn't aware of what has been said so far.

One would be in a better position if one read the opinions expressed on previous pages (even if only a quick skim)rather than reading only those on the final page.
aog, the latest posts box simply tells you that a new post has been added to a thread. I honestly can't see a problem with clicking 'last'. It's not complicated.
I have probably missed all the other stuff on this so I guess it’s too late now but I was just thinking the same the other day. It seems odd to have a notification of a post and not to be taken straight to it.
So I’m with AOG on this one.
AOG, if you have been away making a cuppa, pouring a drink, taking a phone call or answering the door, with a popular thread a lot of posts could be added in that time. So if you went straight to last post you could be in a position where you then have to go backwards through the posts to find the last one you had read. No?
I think leave it as it is.

well that is obvious, buy one has only to enter the News Section (if that is your interest) then
all the threads are there to see, if there is one of particular interesting one, then one just has to click on that particular thread and can then select any page from the beginning to the end, or choose to even read through it from the beginning to the end.
perhaps it can be implemented in user account preferences by site developer, in a future update for this site.

In a long thread, that would be quicker than to start at the beginning so as to reach the last one you had read.
It may appear to be a simple request but it may be too involved or costly to put into effect.
Is it not possible to have both choices? On "Recent posts" you can either go to the beginning or the end directly. Can that be done on "latest" too?
