There are (at least) three or four currently active users who claim to be "new", but are actually nothing of the sort.

I have no particular objection to this and the previous (I think) AB_ED said that (with a few particularly egregious exceptions) he/she had no objections to returnees slinking back, as long as they behaved themselves and stayed away from contentious subject matter - perhaps posting just in Q&P or Crosswords or similar areas.

The problem at the moment is that (after a period of being Mr/Ms Niceperson), the current batch of Lazarus figures are starting to pick fights and generally return to the habits which made them persona non grata, whilst being quite careful to do nothing quite bad enough to get them 'removed' again.

This is (patently) unfair and far from a level playing field. I've seen some long term posters get some quite nasty/subtle abuse over the last few days - from people whose previous history is not available, thus making any attempt to 'give as good as you get' virtually impossible.

I'd like to suggest that all users have to (initially at least) register from a non-mobile device - thus allowing their ID to be verified against the list (which I'm sure must exist) of MAC addresses known to be used by previously banned users then (if the Ed allows them back) their new username can be linked to the old one.

Yes, I know MAC addresses can be faked - but that's probably beyond most of the people that I'm referring to. It might even catch-out a few of the Spammers too.

Don't think that you can return with original user name if anyone goes user inactive, unless the Ed agree's.
For years the same scenario plays out - a user goes inactive, then a new user (or two?) pops up and stirs the pot.

'Oh look!' people cry - 'he/she is back'.

Usually, they aren't.

Puppetry.
I don't suppose you've considered it may be the damage that they're doing to the site, Choux? Today was a good example.

A second username shouldn't be allowed, Togo - but there is a difference between necessity, incompetence and malice.

A veritable hit, Spicerack - but you will (I hope) remember the rather sad circumstances.

I will admit to once using a second username (which I could no longer use, having completely forgotten both the username and password) - I used it to ask a particularly sensitive question (not piles before anyone goes down that road) which it was vital didn't get associated with my (all too easily findable) real life persona.

Mind you, I think my excursion and return was before your time ... unless ... ?
LOL.
Wibble.

I must have been wrong then Dear D.
gness, I don't think one can attribute all the 'damage' done to this site to those who have previously been members. I have seen some terrible postings in the last day or so.
Mmmm......well before.... :-)
If you are a previously 'banned user' it's probably best not to turn up on a thread like this taking the mickey..... LoL
No, Choux.....but when a banned user....and banned for a good reason....returns and picks one or two usually interesting threads, as happened today, to ruin it needs sorting.
Its no secret that I got banned several years ago under another nic. At the time absolutely no one could see why I got banned. One minute I was trying to give someone some advice about the potential of getting ripped of by another ABer and the next I was banned, go figure! There were several posts after (all of which got deleted) complaining that I had done nothing wrong and the banning was non sensical in the extreme and that I had broken NO Site Rules. I left it a few months and signed up again under this nic. As I said, its no secret that I was a banned user, I loved this site then and love it now.....just cant stay away ;-)
What's been going on to-day then????

And you are a good advert for the policy of allowing returnees, Nailit - but not everyone adds the value which you do.

Not always that good Dave, been suspended a couple of times since lol...
Ahh....don't bother about that, Nailit......Ed suspended me for annoying him when he was a bit wrong....but I got a free tee shirt out of it!.....Well freeish......Minty did me a deal if I bought eight...just in case......x
