Satin Glass In A Front Door

Hi,

Am having double glazing installed & having satin glass put in the bathroom window as I'm told it's the best privacy glass to use.

The installer says it looks milky but smart in a front door, & will "hide" the fact the lobby into the lounge is used for storage. As it is, with just obscured glass, it's all pretty much on show. There's another inner door to the lounge so wouldn't affect light into the lounge.

I'm thinking of having a 2 panel / 2 square / 1 arch style browny (to match rosewood windows) composite front door, & would like a pattern in the glass. Can I have satin glass with a pattern (thinking "Classic", possibly "Crystal Tulip" which looks as though the glass panels would be free of a pattern anyway ). Would that work ? Would it look daft (I have no imagination !) as ultimately the property will be sold ? Does anyone have a similar design ?

Cheers

Stain glass maybe ?
for privacy purposes all you need is to stick some film to the window

I'd never heard of it before either. That pic on wiki's disappointing though ... the way it's been described is that the clock that's usually pictured behind samples of different obscured glass to show how effective each type is, can't be seen to be a clock at all.
Sticking film to the glass in a door is something I've considered on my own front door, but not gonna do that when I'm spending £000s replacing doors & windows at another property ! ;)

Least I do know now I can get a pattern etched in it :)

CW1 Obscure glass has a grading from 1 to 5 that denotes the level of visibility through it. I think that satin is level 4 or 5 but it is fairly plain and uninteresting. The link above gives some idea. Ask the suppliers for a choice of level 5 obscure glass. ( I worked for Solaglas for a while) There is more to glass than meets the eye ;-)
I've often wondered whether to put glass into the bathroom door to allow some light into the landing area, but I think even level 5 looks a bit too transparent :-)
What are you doing in there Geezer.(Don't Answer) Put the glass in, and a blind for when the bathroom is occupied.
CW1 Etched glass can be pretty pricey.
Yeah I had considered that.

It's not what I'm doing, it's more about guests using the shower and others walking by ! (Or maybe vice versa.)
CW1 Another thought, you supplier may not supply Pilkington glass, but the other major glass makers supply their dealers with pattern books and samples. The other big player is Glaverbel. A French company who supply some beautiful patterns. I seem to remember Autumn Leaf was lovely.

The installer had explained about the obscured glass ratings, that's how I knew about the "clock" :) He'd originally mentioned stippolyte, was only when he showed me the brochure he realised it was only rated 4 & I wanted something more obscure. That's when he told me about satin glass but didn't have anything he could show me.

All the glass will be Pilkington, & I can have what I want from the Composite Door Brochure here

Have a look at the Pelerine CW1. I confirm that it is very obscure and actually looks like it is etched. The satin is more widely used in work or industrial surroundings and will not enhance any access door in a house. Plus it is not difficult to clean having a very flat surface finish, we have it in our bathroom window. If your bathroom window is closely overlooked you could always choose a pearl finish that comes up white to look at but lets in sufficient light.
I have read this question about 8 times and it may as well be latin to me. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what any of this is about. good luck though.
