I fully understand that it's the Ed's site and them's the site rules...
..just for clarity though, are there a generally agreed set of standards between various Eds and Mods about what is an acceptable posting and what isn't, and are they - more or less - evenhandedly applied?

This is a public participation site. As such certain things, pitches and so on will appeal to different types of people. I think what DTC is saying is that you need to be careful how the site is portrayed to the outside world as well as it's current users because it is billed as being a ' Question and Answer Site'. As such it has a function. To function properly it needs clever well informed people, and as long as it has those it will be great. If the site slithers and loses valuable members ( don't really think you can top 50 things like users), it's unlikely to appeal then to similar people and you might take it's value down a notch. Annoy them in time and they leave and so a downwards spiral begins. Once it becomes an ineffective Q & A site, people stop visiting it for answers and it loses web traffic. then advertisers aren't as attracted. There are millions of people to replace lost users if they flounce off but they do have to be of a certain calibre.
On a personal note, I don't have much of a problem, except it would be nice to know who the moderators are as with most other sites, but generally I think it's a fun informative site who don't get things too wrong.

Maybe it's because the end-objective is the same, to see a reasonably orderly AB (now there's an oxymoron) that is successful and self-generating. With that in mind, all I am doing is verbalising the views that a number of us are picking up on. Take it for what it's worth..... If that is being serious, then yes.

most of the serious question answerers don't really get that involved in Chatterbank or in threads like this, they just go on providing helpful advice on a wide variety of topics. It was that way before CB was even invented (the site used to be nothing but Q&A, you could get a post deleted for saying anything more off-topic than "good morning"). People flouncing or otherwise departing have never made any difference to this. The site's core business, basically, is crossword answers.
somebody did mention a mod room where they could hang out and eat fondant fancies, get spa treatmetns and so forth, it sounds rather nice.
But I failed the foundation course last year, so I'll have to try harder. Honestly, how can anyone be expected to list the characteristics of nine types of troll, and that was just one question.
