Is there any way you can prevent/minimise spiders from coming into the house. I have heard about putting conkers by windows etc.

Well said grasscarp.

Many people are scared of lots of animals, snakes, cats, dogs, butterflies etc, but you don't go around killing them.

Just a bit of useless information for you:

When you see a spider in the bath, its not come up the plughole, its a male spider that has gone in to attract the female spider, by being in a bright space and standing out.
My bath is NOT for fornication...stay out or die!

I don't know. Sound fun!
Sealing all cracks and using flyscreens should see them off.

Of course, this is only as effective as the trouble you go to to prevent them from coming in. There are sprays that make spiders mostly shun your house for 6 months or so, but they should be applied by a professional.

I quite like spiders but I feel for those who are scared of them. An irrational fear is nothing to joke about.
You can deter them coming into your home with a spray product which doesn't kill them and I've been using it for yeas with good results. It's called Spider Stop and the best one I know of is sold by Betterware though I know you can buy it on eBay and amazon too. May I suggest you try it and spray all round your doors and windows on the outside and anywhere else you think they will come in. It really works and I'm so glad it does.
trt. I've watched a spider climb out of the overflow in the bath. I don't care where they come from. If they appear in my house and my husband is not around to rescue them, they are sucked up the hoover. As irrational as I know it is, I just can't bear them.
Yes a very large spider came through the bath overflow and fell in the water while my 11 yr old daughter was in having a bath. A terrifying experience neither of us will ever forget.
spiders fall into the bath from the ceiling, its a myth that they climb up through plug holes.
I dont like spiders but I dont want to kill them just because I dont like them
I like spiders, except for the venomous ones.
They get a size ten very quickly.
It's not a myth. These threads (which come up a lot) always make me angry - this site throws sympathy at every woe any answerbanker wants to raise - except irrational terror of spiders. I wish I wasn't but my fear is very real and very debilitating at this time of year.
//I wish I wasn't...//

Me too, Prudie. A friend of mine has made every effort to raise her children to have no fear of spiders and yet her little girl, now aged 5, has suddenly become afraid of them. Why is anyone's guess. She says its because they have eight legs, but it seems strange to me that of all the creatures on the planet spiders seem to have such a negative effect on so many. I wonder why?
I understand fears can be debilitating, but they can also be conquered to a good degree, My mothers fear of spiders influenced us all when we were kids, it was like a learned behaviour, to the point we would all be freaking out if a spider or a fly came in, as an adult I have learned that spiders are not harmful and I am more of a danger to him than vice versa, when I visit my mother I find it bizarre that she would rather panic and spray a whole can of wasp spray at a small black fly than open a window and waft it out.
We know it's irrational - but knowing doesn't help. I'll get any other creature in a glass and evict it from the house - even those that I know can sting me - but I simply cannot go anywhere near a spider. Crazy!
I think part of the dislike of spiders and other small crawlies is in their unpredicable movements, they can suddenly change direction and speed easily making it hard to predict their movements, making it hard to remove them.
Has anyone noticed there are more Mosquitos around than usual? There have been quite a few in my house. I've managed to squash most of them, but there's one hanging around my bedroom that I can't see. It's not biting me, thankfully. I'd be happy to let it live if it didn't make that terrible whining noise.
Get yourself a pet spider or two Cloverjo.
No more mozzies.
