Why bother? What are they going to do with them? What if it reduces performance? They are also saying the cost of the recall could cost jobs. It's not worth it, just leave them as they are, lesson learned, ignore the tree huggers.

Why should a major manufacturing company get away with lying to everyone?
If their product is not what it is claimed to be why should they not be forced to fix it somehow?
Who was telling "porkies" here?
Volkswagen will be keen to be seen to be doing something and will move heaven and earth to show how sorry they are.
Remember, they're in the business of selling cars and will already be planning their recovery.
VW are teetering on the edge of a precipice here. This could see the start of the end of the company altogether, especially if the greedy American legal profession get their teeth into this affair. Already there are writs issued against VW in American courts. They also face prosecution by various Government authorities for what amounts to fraud. Make no bones about...this is about the worse that it can get, and no amount of musical chairs in the Boardroom is going to be enough.

They have no choice but to do all they can to make amends. My nephew works in the industry and he reckons that all that is needed is a software update, and it could prove a good money earner for the VW dealership across the UK....in fact it could spread beyond that, as other garages may have to get involved as the work load is so great.

This is going to run and run !
They must be recalled because they are known to be emitting massively higher emissions than permitted.

They have to be reprogrammed to run in low emission mode all the time, not just when on a rolling road.

If you or your children suffered from asthma Dave50, I promise you that you would have a different opinion.
And when they are re-programmed to run at the emission level they should and purchasers find their running costs are much higher than advertised there may be a civil case to be answered.
End result is major manufacturing companies should not lie!!!
Or anyone else.
As it is bad publicity to have known how you passed the test it is simply good sense to sort that out and put it into the past. Otherwise it'll be mentioned forevermore, hitting interest and sales.

I don't see how it will cost jobs, recalls don't normally do they ? Just a small extra cost to reduce the massive profit large companies make. Scaremongering I reckon.
The cost isn't mainly in the recall, OG, it's in the law suits to follow.
I am no legal eagle but I'm surprised there can be lawsuits. But I guess it is in the test description. There was a level the car had to emit less than, and a test that showed that it did. Tick in the box. Anyway any legal costs is surely not caused by the recall, but either will happen anyway, or possibly be caused by a lack of recall ?

If this does push the company under, the deluded environmentalists will probably think it's a price worth paying.
they need recalling because its unfair to all the other car owners whose cars don't cheat emissions tests and unfair to the other companies who lost sales because they didn't make use of the cheat technology.
they will have to change the software to use low emission settings all the time. This will mean that the owners will suddenly notice that their car is very sluggish. In many case they will then sell it on but there will be very few buyers so they'll be dirt cheap. This is in turn will depress prices generally amongst diesels. Give it a couple of years and this silly diesel car experiment will be over.
" running costs are much higher than advertised "

I'll bet most people wont even notice the difference....
Most people don't realise that the actual amounts of pollution emitted are thirty-five times as much as the fiddled tests claim. No wonder pollution around Europe is not dropping as fast as expected.
