How about a tankard (possibly engraved) with a rugby motif on it. Here's an example:

(The tankard illustrated is for a 50th birthday but you can change that when you personalise your order).
There are numerous beer clubs that deliver a case of 12 bottles of micro brews and beer from lesser known breweries on a quarterly basis.

Perhaps approach his rugby club and ask if the players will autograph a rugby ball for him ??

Apparently he has a box at the ground and already has signed shirts and balls. Still struggling!
What sort of budget do you have?
Ticket for the rugby World Cup final (If you can get one)
A tree for the garden.
A very good malt whisky.
Something that he might not do such as a Thai cooking experience.
A collection of wines from countries he has visited.
There is a website called bygone news.com where you get get newspapers for 1955, you can specify a particular date, might be of interest. It sounds as though this man has plenty of money so probably has most things he needs already so this would be something different.
Some beers here - they will also personalise the labels :-
