I have just been told these will have to be fitted to rented property from oct 2015. I have been quoted 47 quid plus fitting and vat. with a 7 year guarantee. is this a good deal?

^^^Agreed, Dogsbody2.

I do know the difference but my brain doesn't start working until around tea-time these days!
;-)
is 47 quid for a hard wired one or a battery one?
You won't get a hard-wired one for £47 unless the Polish electricians are really struggling to find work.
We use Aico 230v detectors..they seem to give few problems.A CO detector will cost us about £32 plus VAT.Fitting costs vary..however if the system is up to date and you dont live inside the N/S circular about £70 plus VAT to fit.As said..irrespective of the rules ...get them done...and keep them maintained.

whats a hard - wired one?,
always have a co detector in the same room as a boiler..place it up high as any co will rise and will be detected soonest...plenty on Amazon...
a wired one is installed as part of your electrics..a battery one is just as good though, as long as you remember to replace batteries after a bit, they have a test button built in..
As its the landlords responsibility to install and maintain smoke/CO alarms in rented properties battery only alarms should be avoided as the batteries can be removed for kids toys etc...then in the event of an issue the onus is on the landlord to prove due diligence. If you must go down the cheap route then buy a lithium powered sealed unit...about £20....with a 5 year life.
