Medieval Ridge And Furrow

I have read several descriptions of the Medieval Ridge and Furrow system of ploughing but am still uncertain as to just what the `furrow` refers. Was it the unploughed strip of ground that separated one farmer`s strip (dale?) from another?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Ii think the furrow is the groove created by the plough moving the earth upwards to create the ridge.
