I had a cut off from my carpet being laid, which I had professionally stitched all-round the edges.

Its about 7 foot x 2 foot, 4 years old.

Would it be OK in the washing machine?

If it's a decent carpet .. it may end up 5 foot x 18" ... if it's not the foam back may delaminate.

Do you know how to fix washing machines ?

We do our mats at the launderette, don't put them on a hot wash. We take them back and drip dry them outside.
Hi Trt, if you have a bath you could un-roll it & give it a scrub/ rinse then roll back up, stick it in a tub/ bucket & dry out on a line? Or, do you know someone with a carpet cleaning machine or steam gun?
^ Or as mentioned .. your launderette/ dry cleaners might have that service.
Second thoughts ... too long & heavy for the line possibly ... not to mention a pain in the bum to clean. Check your local launderette or dry cleaners out as mentioned above. Some things are worth being done for you.
I wash my Persian rugs in the bath and dry them flat in the shade
