It's a huge commitment over 4 months that not many men are prepared to make.
//refraining from sex or masturbation//

I guess if the 'payment' covers expenses then you are still a donor?
you're probably right, ymb, the story just says they receive £35.
Sorry to introduce another dimension to this debate but....

There are too many people in the world (and in the UK)

Sperm donation increases the population by allowing people who otherwise would not have children to have them.

Therefore sperm donation adds to the problem

Therefore sperm banks are not required and should be discouraged. (I would actually prefer them to be banned but I'll settle for "discouraged" for the moment).
So you keep saying, NJ, but it's in some peoples nature to long for children.

You'll like this little bit of info. I was at a wedding last week. Bride is one of 14...the grandkids are currently 44 with two on the way :-)
Not everyone is stoical about their fertility problems, easy for others to say 'ah well'.
I would never say 'ah well' it's in our make-up to want to reproduce. I'd have complete sympathy for anyone that found they couldn't do it.

Wasn't directed at you Ummmm, hope you know that.

Big families on my Dad's side of the family too.
Yes, I know :-)

I have a large family...9 uncles and 7 aunts...and all the cousins. I love it.
I don't think they try for volunteers do they ? Don't recall having ever seen a poster or a leaflet. I'm too old to leave a deposit now though. They must have an age limit to keep quality up.
the Guardian recently had a story on the problems of larger families

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2015/aug/25/britain-boom-big-families-45-year-high

Apparently this means four children and up. In my day four children was a small family.
I think most people on AB know my view that to have more than two children is irresponsible. To have 14 children is as good as a criminal offence in my book.

It's strange that "climate change deniers" (of which I'm probably one, depending on your interpretation) are spoken of in the same vein as King Herod. However, anyone speaking out against over population (a far greater threat to humanity than climate change is ever likely to be) is shouted down as it's in "many people's nature" to have far too many children.
Ignoring issues re everyone's right in a commercial world to offer and accept services, for which there are limits anyway; there should be a rule for banks to limit the number of times a customer can request a pregnancy: perhaps to one success, or two at most. Parenthood is not a right, it is a privilege given by fate (for want of a better description). For sure, on compassionate grounds one can see a desire to help someone who believes they only have one life and one chance for another generation; but to offer beyond that could be seen as irresponsible.
