Hi all,

My battered old laptop has stopped playing sounds.

I've looked at the troubleshooting guide, and it recommends uninstalling and reinstalling. I've done that and it's the same.

I've seen somewhere that taking the unit out and putting it back in might work, but I don't know what the unit is and I'm reluctant to do something like that in case I screw my laptop up altogether.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

What Windows OS?

You could try re-installing the audio files from here, but make sure you choose the correct Windows OS

I'm on Windows XP

I've tried reinstallilling the device after downloading it from Dell, but it won't start, with an error code of 10.

Any ideas?
Can you quote the exact 'error' message and where from?

If I go into 'Sounds and Audio devices ' and click on Hardware, then click on Sigma Tel... (which I assume is the sound bit), It says PCI Bus 0, device 31, function 5, Device Status : This device cannot start (Code 10).

Hope it helps.
You could try uninstalling drivers again and reinstall using the following drivers, which are a later version:

Thanks for that.

I uninstalled the driver, and went on the Dell website and successfully downloaded the zipped files.

I ran it, and I got an error message 'Device object not present' reload and try again.

I did and the same thing happened.

Any ideas please?
