I know one is supposed to keep tax and certain bank I for for 6 years but does that mean that 6 years of bank statements need to be filed and kept or would it be ok just to keep the end of year tax paid/deducted or do the whole of the statements have to be preserved? Many thanks for your replies.

If it's for business I'd keep all statements. If it's personal tax I'd just use the year end certificates. The principle is the same as using P60s rather than copies of each salary slip

Hi FF, it's personal tax not business. Just wanted rid of six yrs of paper statements if I could though the end of year statements contain less info of course. Fed up with all the paper in my files but loathe to go 'paperless' in case that presents problems.
Go paperless. You can get any 'statement' you want when you want it.
I agree with svejk, though they may charge you if you are challenged, tax-wise.....personally, I keep the statements....my mater on the other hand, that's an annual challenge, the joys of Alzheimers to contend with - Equiniti etc are pretty considerate though.
