Can't Get Cistern Lid Off

I have a Fordham Élan plastic cistern. When I flushed it this afternoon, something snapped inside and now the handle just spins around.

I have been trying to get the lid off to see inside what needs to be done, but I can't get the single large plastic screw off, on the top.

Is it a single thread screw that releases it? Any help would be great.

'Fraid not, emeritus. It's lying flush to the top of the lid and just has a screw-like line to put a screwdriver into.
If it was me, I'd give it a gentle try with a screwdriver and see......

Time to call my son round then, because I can't shift it. Is brute force needed?
Sorry, didn't read properly...you've been trying....
Maybe a squirt of WD40 might help?
Or get your son round......
Yes, it may take a touch of brute force. When you eventually get it off, it'll be easy to see what has come undone.

Thanks all. Just was wondering if it was a screw that needs just one rotation to free it, or is it one, needing many rotations?
