I am trying to translate, I assume the cod and four is one fish and four portions of chips etc. Or am I wrong? Can anyone help with the rest?
I would guess, dave, that it would have referred to the price of the Chips - Fourpence/Sixpence worth. Someone might put me right on that.
^^^

I thought it may have dented the portion size, dave. As in, 'a plaice and four penneth, two plaice and six penneth, etc'. Probably wrong:-)
dented? - denoted
No you're not wrong Ken. we often used to have fish and four when I was little - 40s/50s. Four was four pennyworth of chips. Good portions too!
