Ok. I know that this sounds like a daft question before anyone tells me so.

I have just bought a starter aquarium for my nephew and he wants bubbles up the back.

The tank came with something but I'm not sure if it's an air pump or a filter (or are they the same thing?). It has a snorkel which must remain out of the water, and the other outlet below the water line blows out water and bubbles just below the surface.

I brought a small air stone but I'm not sure which outlet to fit it to.

I've tried putting it on the outlet, but all that does is to push water out of the snorkel.

What am I doing wrong?

it sounds like you need a separate air pump. what you describe as the'snorkel' is there to draw a small amount of air into the filter to aerate the water
