I’m a man who wears nail varnish. Seriously. A couple of years ago, the effect of frequent bass playing was that my left thumbnail developed a split from front to back, very painful when one half started to come away. It was suggested that I regularly apply clear nail varnish and – touch wood – it’s gradually repaired itself.

Thank you anax I have been using the varnish / treatments for split nails and while it worked for a while I have never had them this bad. What varnish do you use - it must be good as I should imagine that with playing an instrument your nail are quite tough

Sally Hansen Miracle nail thickener.
Can't believe I'm typing this - I'm a bloke! ;)
It does seem to be pretty good stuff though. I'm only a dep for the band now, but when I was full-time we gigged 3-4 times a month plus 2 or 3 rehearsals, so maybe 14 hours/month max plus whatever noodlings I did to rehearse stuff at home. I had to apply the varnish maybe once a month.

Thank you again anax - I wont say anything to anyone :-)
I work in a kitchen, and have been plagued by horribly split and peeling nails for years. I always wore nail varnish to cover them up. I stumbled on a product called Healthy Hoof about a year and ahalf ago. It has helped immensely. I use 2-3 times a day...I saw an improvement after about 3 weeks. I stopped using it over the winter, and my nails deteriorated,so consistent use is key. A little goes along way.

Another good tip ladybirder thank you - can you recommend any?
many stable grooms have very strong nails which comes from applying hoof preps - cornucrescine is a popular one.
Here's some branded ones on ebay from a good seller. Loads of unbranded ones as well but I would be wary of those. They smooth your wrinkles out as well if you have any.

Superglue.
Seriously. It gives the nail time to bond and then the problem passes.
I swear by this:- http://m.dior.com/en_gb/fragrance-and-beauty/make-up-and-cosmetics-by-christian-dior-lipstick-m/nails/manicure/pr-manicure-Y0028102-nail-creme.html?gclid=CjwKEAjwmZWvBRCCqrDK_8atgBUSJACnib3lryf7btAlvrjevlr0MwY-Vq50ef6nAVKnLd7UXW1FcxoC87rw_wcB

One pot lasts me about 6 months, I put it on every night, and my nails have never been stronger! I work as a nurse so am always washing my hands!! This has strengthened them so much!!
