I'm having a bit of a cull - the shelf was groaning under the strain.

The first one into my lifeboat would be Prue Leith's "Cookery Bible", followed closely by Nigel Slater's "Real Fast Food".

Then it would probably be one of the early Nigellas - sneer if you want, but her recipes do work.

Which made me think - what are your 'indispensable' cook books?

Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, great for simple cake recipes.
Well spotted, Jno ;-)

Mr Beeton's books might well have been far more interesting since, after his wife's death at the age of 28, he went on to become a prolific publisher of pornography!

Delia's 'How to Cheat at Cooking' is my favourite.
Did he Chris, got any links ;-)
I did once did an Ainsley Harriot's Meals in Minutes thing with pork and prunes.....thought I could manage minutes....took flipping ages...the fibber........!
Ainsley's like that, Gness.
Yeah...but it's usually the other way round with men, Tilly....took me by surprise.....x
Doh
I see that, Gness. Always takes longer than you think! Gawd!
Oh, Iv'e got that wrong. I see what you mean now. :-)
I'll bet the prunes were faster than Ainsley's recipe though.
I look at the pictures in recipe books, and think that isn't going to happen.
Before I moved to this house I had hundreds of cookery books. I used yo have a whole wall of bookshelves and they were filled to their capacity. So when I knew I was moving here they had to go. I used to take them into work and people just chose what they wanted. What was left went to charity shops. Now I only have about four cook books. I now collect recipes from a magazines and papers. I staple them to a piece of paper and have them in plastic pockets in lever arch files. I have them in different categories IE, beef, lamb, pork, fish, veg etc.
I have 8 files all together. Much easier than all my loads of cook books.
