"Women who are over 60 and take HRT more than 10 years after the menopause have an increased risk of heart disease. But the risk is small to begin with. Over five years, nearly 2 in 100 women taking HRT were at risk of heart disease, compared with 1.5 in 100 women not taking HRT."

that was all I could find. Who ha said its not suitable? I would suggest that you ask them why?
My only thoughts on this is that the Drs seem to change their minds about HRT as often as most people change their bedsheets.
I was on it after a hysterectomy , when I was told that I had to have it to prevent osteoporosis, then later I was told I had to come off it because of increased risk of breast cancer. (No history of either in my family .)
I'm waiting to be told that I have to be on it again to prevent something else.
I am no expert, but i know of no reasons why a woman with no history of heart or blood clot troubles shouldn't take HRT into "old age"

The medical profession has been going around in circles concerning the increased incidence of cancer, heart disease and blood clots and the conclusions are.........inconclusive:

Breast cancer.....might be a slight increase......MIGHT.
Uterine cancer......might be a slight increase......MIGHT
Breast cancer.......might be a reduction in cases.....MIGHT.

So there are MY thoughts, off the top of my head...so to speak.
Its not up to doctors to change their minds and have personal opinions (hello Sqad!!) They should be looking at the evidence and coming to conclusions which they can then explain and justify to the patient.
ha ha I was typing that as you posted Sqad, I must be psychic.
Ah!,,,,,thanks for the tip woofy...........we had never thought of that.
Latest recommendation seems to be HRT can be used in the over 60s but preferably transdermally and at the lowest possible dose.

Medicine.....art or science ?
Art - definitely! :)
After my hysterectomy I was told by Consultant that he did not want me to take it because of history of young strokes in family.
sqad, the way some doctors behave, I could believe that :)
ladyalex, the art should begin where the science ends. Experience and educated opinion is fine and useful ONCE the limit of objective knowledge has been reached.
^^^^ you are a class act woofy " ;-)
you know it Sqad!
Why won't they give it to me? I'll be 66 in a week and have had horrible menopausal symptoms since I was 50. Even this morning a dream turned nasty and I awoke with pounding heart, shortly to be followed by a huge burn and sweat, and huge feelings of insecurity, I'd wasted my life and general uselessness in the world. Why won't the doctors listen?????
Jourdain, you would need to ask your doctor that. You can also pay to see a consultant privately to see what your options are but the GP will need to refer you. They are usually happy to do so.
