What version of Windows does it have, as some have inbuilt security, so there's no need to bother downloading anything ??
In any case there are a number of free AV progs out there. Just make a choice, or opt to pay if you prefer.
If you want McAfee & you're with BT some of their Broadband packages include free "BT NetProtect Plus" (McAfee) -

Microsoft include their own security software (either as Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender) as part of Windows. So (theoretically at least) you don't need anything else.

However even Microsoft have admitted that their stuff isn't as good as they'd like it to be, so you might want to consider using the free version of Avast (which is what I use) instead:

That gets your anti-virus solution sorted out but some people are also critical of the firewall that's built into Windows. If you'd prefer to use a different free firewall (that offers better '2-way' protection), Comodo will meet your needs:

That just leaves anti-malware provision (which even commercial products such as McAfee, Norton and Kaspersky tend to be very poor at dealing with anyway). Simply download and install the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/
(NB: When installing it, take care to remove the tick alongside the option to take a free trial of the Premium version). Because it's 'run on demand', rather than 'run in the background', you just need to remember to activate it periodically (perhaps once per fortnight) to scan for any problems.
You have not even told us if it IS a Windows computer.

The answers given will vary depending on what type of computer it is, there are loads of different types of computers.
Everybody seems to have forgotten the biggest company in the market Norton, I have been using it for more years than I can remember and never had a virus. The latest version will work for laptops, tablets and phones. It averages out at a respectable £8-10 per device per year which I think is small to keep you safe. It will also do your backups and cleanups if you ask it nicely. While many set store by the free ones you see a lot of complaints here and online from people who use them. if you are unsure download a 30 day trial version
If you want to pay for internet securty, Kaspersky is usually top in most tech related publications.
