Import Duty/tax?

I needed to replace a broken extension leaf on my glass dining room table but 5 years after purchase couldn't find a stockist in the UK. I contacted the manufacturer in Italy who said they could supply one and are sending it over to me by courier. I was very pleased with the price £101 which includes transportation and I am now waiting for them to dispatch it.
Someone then told me that I may have to pay some kind of import tax on it when it arrives. I have looked on the HMRC website but it's not really clear on if or when this applies. Anyone know if I would be liable for this fee and if so how much, when and who it is payable too?

Well Italy was in the EC the last time I looked, so I can't see there being any tax due, unless you didn't pay the Italian "VAT".

Thanks bhg, shouldn't be any hidden extras then, cos I was really pleased with the cost. Dining room suite was expensive so was expecting a lot more to replace that leaf.
