The problem with "oldies" being on their way out squad is that the next generation will just be taking their place.

If it was possible even at my age of 67 I would get off my rse & Fight for this country, It appears I would be fighting with just a few people that was running to take their gap year /going to pick up their benefits / frighten to death that they might miss B.B. Or X factor even looking for a fecking LINK
A professional body of armed services would be my preference as opposed to a group made up of conscripted miscreants.

We have moved on a long way since the National Service days and to suggest it be reintroduced as a correctional facility is beyond daft.

Did these Squaddies have experience before they joined / called up? were they already trained.
Recruits undergo interviews, assessment and selection.

I'd be much happier knowing that a new recruit was there because they wanted to be and had met all the various criteria to confirm their suitability.

Do you really think sweeping young scrotes off the street is what the armed services need?

I think it's the difference between wanting to be there as part of a Professional Set-up or being forced to be there as a National Service person would be.
I know which one I'd want watching my back!
EcclesCake...common sense this afternoon !
national service does not necessarily mean Armed Forces

MM,^^^ in terms of the OP it does!

Young scrotes would not have a choice Eccles,
TWR and neither would the armed services following your twisted logic.

It is a shockingly bad idea and waste of money, resources and training.
Question Author
Well, if there was a war Eccles I'd make sure I was behind you & the scrotes.
Why should the majority of youngsters be punished because of the minority?
sherrardk...good point !
To be honest TWR I would not want to be at the side you in a war situation. You come across as a loose cannon.
I would support the long holiday after A levels being used for 'national service'. 6 weeks, that's all, and it could change lives. NS would include all sorts of voluntary services and the aim would be to broaden minds and experience. Certificates could be issued to help boost personal profiles.

For those not attempting 'A' levels, that time could also be used to do 'National Service' of various kinds - a longer spread, perhaps a year. This would give valuable experience and certification of effort and experience.

Just a thought.
Define National Service
Would have to be for male and female
Holiday after A levels? Time much to recuperate.
How stressed do you want young people to be?
It's pointless, the 'good' kids wouldn't need a certificate, they would have plenty of other meaningful certificates. The scortes wouldn't have even made it to A levels. I have one child who (on current form) will probably need a short, sharp shock at some stage in her life but my others don't need to perform some sort of NS to become better people.
