Mozilla is very slow and Not Responding when I try to use ebay on my laptop. Is anyone else having these problems? In fact my laptop is slow full stop. It is quite old but has been repaired recently and the repair guy said he did something to make it work faster, but its not!! Wondering if it could just be Firefox ... Should I delete it completely and reinstall, or just try another provider? What do you recommend? Easy answers as I am not technical. My laptop is 64 whatever they are....

>>>Should I delete it completely and reinstall

No. Try refreshing it first:
Go to Tools > Add-ons > Extensions and note down the name of any extensions that you're using (and wish to retain).
Then go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click on 'Refresh Firefox'.
That preserves most of your data (such as your bookmarks) but removes your extensions, so you should then reinstall them.

Further, problems with Firefox showing 'not responding' are often linked to other programs hogging most of your laptop's resources. Run a full scan with your anti-virus software and also with the free version of Malwarebyte's:
https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/
(When installing it, take care to deselect the pre-ticked option to take a free trial of the Premium version).

Then see my post here to find out how to identify anything else that's hogging your laptop's resources:

Who is your Internet Service Provider.?

Perhaps your ISP has problems and you are Not getting a good Broadband connection.

Click the following link and check the speeds you are getting; then post hereby the results :-

I've got the same, but I can't find 'Tools' on my list of programmes.
>>>I can't find 'Tools' on my list of programmes

If you've got the menu bar active in Firefox you'll have File, Edit, etc, across the top of your screen. Tools and Help are both there.

If you've not got the menu bar displayed, simply right-click in a blank space near to the top of your screen and then click to put a tick next to Menu Bar.
@lankeela.....If you are using Firefox you should see at the top left of the screen a strip with the words File.Edit.View.History.Bookmarks.Tools.Help.
If they are Not there then do the following. :-

Move your mouse pointer up to the very top centre of your screen and give a Right Click. Then, in the Drop-down Menu, click a tick in front of Menu Bar. It's also worthwhile making sure there is a tick in front of Bookmarks Toolbar.

[email protected] beat me to it. My typing speed is worse than yours. ☺☺☺

Thank you so much Chris and everyone, I havent had time to do anything yet, but I will, and if I get more problems I will be back! Trouble is there is always a list of things downloaded on the laptop but they make no sense to me so I wouldnt know what to delete or what I need to keep. I am with BT Broadband by the way. And my ipad is much faster!

Hi Chris, only two items in Extensions, both disabled. Default Manager disabled due to security or stability ussues. Smartprint Button disabled. Imcompatible with Firefox 39.0. I am now Refreshing Firefox. Should I forget the Extensions ?
I use both quite happily and never noticed any speed issues but then I am very close to a fibre exchange
Question Author
Sorry ukbod so what do I do if they are both disabled? Do I need to download them again or not?And what is a fibre exchange? ? I am about to do a full scan with Microsoft Security Essentials, which will probably take until the middle of next week ... Any more understandable help greatly appreciated!

Firefox has finished refreshing but I have lost Microsoft Security Essentials. I had malwarebytes Anti Malware installed and this has just stopped scanning. Should I reinstall MSE or is there any better security I should install instead?
>>>Should I forget the Extensions ?

Yes.

>>>I have lost Microsoft Security Essentials

That's extremely weird!

Download the installation program for Avast. (It's better than MSE). However don't double-click on the file (to actually install it) straight away. First, go to your list of installed programs and uninstall MSE. (Then run the Avast installation program to install it).

Just one little tip for Avast though:
By default, every time it updates itself you'll hear an annoying American woman's voice telling you that it's happened. (That can be really annoying if you're watching a video, or playing a music file, when she does it!). So it's best to turn her off. To do so, click on the Avast icon at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. (It's a curly 'a' inside a mustard-coloured circle; you might need to go via 'Show hidden icons' to see it). Then click 'Settings' and 'Sounds'. Click to remove the tick in that section and then on 'OK'.

Hi Chris .. After I switched off and switched on again. MSE had returned. I also discovered I had free McAffee installed which has done a scan, and same with Malwarebytes .... Should I delete all three, and go with just Avast? When opening ebay, Firefox still keeps saying Not Responding, and takes ages to let me log in ......thanks ! By the way would you recommend snother search engine ?
The free version of Malwarebytes is a 'run on demand' program. (i.e. it does absolutely nothing unless you actively run a scan with it). So it can't conflict with any other security software and, as I'd regard it as essential on any internet-connected computer, you'd be mad to get rid of it. (Remember to run it periodically though; perhaps once per fortnight)

However having two anti-virus programs 'running in the background' simultaneously is asking for trouble. You definitely shouldn't have McAfee and MSE running together! Since any 'free' version of McAfee will be time-limited (and will then ask you for payment in order to keep using it), that's what I'd get rid of. The instructions for completely getting rid of it are here
https://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331
They make it seem incredibly complicated but all it actually says is:
1. Go to your list of installed programs and uninstall ' McAfee SecurityCenter' ; then
2. Download and run this file:
http://us.mcafee.com/apps/supporttools/mcpr/mcpr.asp
(In practice you can probably get away without running Step 2 anyway)

Once you've got rid of McAfee, you can either continue using MSE or uninstall it and then install Avast (as above).

Many thanks Chris. Should I keep MSE? Sorry about all the questions x. I havent done a full scan with it yet ...
Apologies for the belated reply but I didn't want to distract you from Chris`s assistance. Standard internet runs anywhere between 1 and 8mbps speed typically. When they upgrade your exchange to fibre optic that gives a theoretical maximum of 76mbps. You will know if it's available in your area because they put stickers on the boxes. Obviously it's a bit more expensive.

Thanks all. I will give it a go. If I still have slowness problems I will return ... x
