Am I being unsympathetic by saying she only has herself to blame for having 8 kids?
Yes, it is her right to have as many as she chooses, but with the national average of 1.8 children per family, can (or should) the government legislate fairly for extremes like this?

Reading about all the help single mums get made me think. Child tax credit didn't exist in my day. My marriage broke up when my daughter was one. I had to go back to mum. I wasn't entitled to anything, but if I moved in with mums next door neighbour I would be entitled to a small pittance. I couldn't and wouldn't lie so I got nothing. Also family allowance was not paid for the first child. When they brought the ruling in to give first time children family allowance there was a sting in the tale. You were taxed on it twice! By this time I had gone back to work because I couldn't sponge off parents any longer. Got daughter into a nursery that I had to pay for. I had a notice of coding from the tax office. I worked in salaries so I understood it. There it was two times tax on F/A. I rang tax office to complain made no difference. Could they have got away with that nowadays?

Interesting what you say caran. At what point in history did we start to support people who mad irresponsible decisions? I think for some, life has been made relatively easy despite poor decisions (such as bringing 8 lives into the world and requiring benefits to survive). I realise for some people life has handed them a poor deal through no fault of there own and I am not getting at this group.
